Chased Silver Spirals with Flat Lining - One of my more ambitious pieces, this was made shortly after attending a class with swordsmith Peter Johnsson with a focus on blades and styles from the La Tène culture, often lumped in with the ubiquitous Celtic cultures. I’ve always had a strong affinity for spirals and repeating patterns, and the leanings of this particular art style felt like a very natural fit. The techniques used to create these shapes are very familiar to me, but what made it ambitious was the scale of the work combined with the thin base material I began with. 24ga fine silver, or 0.02”/0.5mm is quite thin and the possibility of punching through the material was very real. The frailness of the material is also what drove my decision to solder a thicker piece of silver to the base, this time 18ga. It added a very necessary amount of weight and structure to the piece, as well as giving it an attractive look to the finish. As much as it added to the piece, I don’t think I’ll take this approach as a standard for many future pieces unless specifically requested. Right now I think I’d prefer to simply start with heavier material and leave the underside exposed. Maybe I’m biased, but I really enjoy seeing the inverse of a well-made surface with this technique.

Measurements: approximately 65mm wide (interior measurement), 45mm tall (interior), with a 32mm opening.

Price: $800 USD plus shipping. Please email me at michaelcoffeymetal@gmail.com with any questions or purchasing info.

Rapture Eye Pendant - I made this piece as part of a series of small necklace pendants with the concept of creating works that have the feel of some sort of ancient currency or coins. This one is made out of solid, fine silver and features a hand hammered and polished rim, carved detail and other surface textures to give the feel of age, falling out of pockets, and passing many hands. The hanging loop is also of fine silver, soldered and stretched to an oval shape, ready to be hung with a chain of your choice.

This piece is approximately the size of an American nickel, or approximately .75”/24mm round. PLEASE NOTE: this piece is sold AS PICTURED, I do not supply chains with my pendants. There are many jewelry and chain manufacturers out there that can supply them far cheaper than I can.

Price - $75 USD plus shipping. Please email me at michaelcoffeymetal@gmail.com with any questions or purchasing info.

Steel Open Spiral - This piece was forged in front of an audience as part of a demonstration at a Renaissance Fair in Charlton, MA during the summer of 2012. The final picture in the slideshow is the very same piece being made. It started life as a piece of scrap mild (low-carbon) steel in a workshop and has been given new life as a very satisfying open spiral. These are a bit more challenging to make compared to the type of spiral where the material is simply rolled up on itself like a rug end. While also satisfying and fun to make, this style allows for more of an interplay of relationships between the taper of the material itself versus the negative space between loops. The firescale has been left on this piece, giving it a very rough and interesting surface texture. Once it has a buyer, I’ll coat it in a layer of wax to preserve the surface and help prevent rusting.

Measurements: approximately 52x38mm

Price - $40 USD plus shipping. Please email me at michaelcoffeymetal@gmail.com with any questions or purchasing info.

Wrought Stone Disc - This is a piece inspired by actual stone pieces made in the same style in ancient China. This was forged from a single piece of wrought iron found in the woods of Bethany, CT. The intention was to work with the material in a way that would play well with the radial nature of the piece. The material was hammered into a squat cylinder and then forged flat from top to bottom to show off what is referred to as the “end grain”, a term used to describe the look of a cross section of this particular material. The manufacturing process of wrought iron gives it a very linear but often times varied, striated arrangement of textures and lines, very similar to straighter wood grains. With the proper care, this grain can be manipulated into a number of different orientations. This particular arrangement was a bit of an exercise in faith that it would turn out the way I was hoping, and although it was a bit different than expected I’m very pleased with the result.

Measurements: approximately 43mm round, 4mm thick at the center

Fly Away to Victory - A delicate multi-piece inlaid pendant with a hopefully recognizable reference of a flight feather. The base material is a type of brass often referred to as gilding metal, or more recently (and absurdly) NuGold. Silly names aside, the low zinc content lends it a really lovely and warm color once a good surface patina starts to set in. I chose it to balance out the material choices for the feather itself - fine silver and copper. All elements on this piece, including the wire but excepting the brass bale, are not soldered. Only inlay techniques were used to secure all the pieces, but of course this was not possible with the brass bale so that was simply soldered at the base seam. The surface of the piece is currently unprotected, I could leave it as is to have the patina develop further, or coat it in wax to prevent further buildup, whichever the future owner prefers.

Measurements: base square is approximately 12.5mm, total height when hanging is approx. 25mm
